4 Causes Of Water Sounds From Your Air Conditioning Unit
Posted on: 7 July 2020
Your air conditioning unit is supposed to run completely quietly; however, if your air conditioning unit sounds like water is dripping out of it, something is wrong with your air conditioning unit and it is in need of repair. There are a number of reasons why your air conditioning unit may sound like water is dripping from it.
How Your Air Conditioner Operates Normally
When your air conditioner is operating normally, it will pull in the warm air from inside of your home and cool that air off by blowing the warm air over an evaporator coil. The evaporator coil contains refrigerant, which helps to cool things off.
As the refrigeration circulate and absorbs heat, it is natural for condensation to develop. Usually, that condensation is designed to run into a drain pan, which then directs that condensation into a line that drains the water away from your home. A problem occurs when something goes wrong with one part of this step. Oftentimes, dripping water is simple enough to resolve.
Five Causes of a Dripping Air Conditioner
When water starts to drip out of your air conditioner, there are a couple of different reasons for this. Some are simple to take care of, and others will require more skilled repair.
1. Cracked Drainpipe
There is a drain pan that is under the area where condensation generally develops. If there is a crack in your drain pan, the water is not going to make its way into the condensation line, and you will hear the water dripping out. All that you need to do is change out the cracked drain pan.
2. Clogged Condensation Drain Line
Next, you could have a clogged condensation drain line. The drain line may just have gotten clogged up with some debris. You can pour hot water through the line or traditional drain cleaner through the line. Or you can change the line.
3. Broken Condensate Pump
There is a pump that helps to pump the water out of your system. If the pump fails, the water will not go where it should, which can lead to dripping water. In this case, you would need to either repair or replace the condensate pump for your unit.
4. Not Enough Refrigerant
If there is not enough refrigerant in the system, excess condensation can build up. Adding more refrigerant to the system can help fix this issue. If the refrigerant is leaking out, that issue will have to be addressed as well.
5. Dirty Air Filter
Finally, a dirty air filter can also cause excessive condensation and dripping, as air is not able to move around properly. This can be solved by simply changing out the filter.
If your air conditioner is dripping water, one of the five above reasons is probably why. By fixing the issue, you should get rid of that dripping water sound. Contact an air conditioning repair service to learn more.
